Deviant Behavior is the only journal that specifically and exclusively addresses social deviance. International and interdisciplinary in scope, it publishes refereed theoretical, descriptive, methodological, and applied papers.

Deviant behavior usually evokes formal and informal punishment, restrictions, or other controls of society. These formal and informal controls constrain most people to conform to social norms. Despite the social sanctioning and controlling, however, we sometimes observe deviant behavior around us.

This tendency to pass down deviant behavior through generations is a cycle of family violence (Lemert 48). Parents are unable to separate childhood traumas from the relationships with their own kids. A group called Child Protective Services are created to remove abuse from the sibling that can cause more harm to the victim.

In starting to look more closely at the concept of deviance, it tends to be assumed that "deviant behaviour" is somehow always behaviour that is generally frowned upon by people in a society (the very name seems to imply that such behaviour is, at best, "not very nice" and, at worst, downright criminal).
