As dimethyl sulfate can be metabolized to methanol, there is the theoretical possibility of superadded methanol poisoning, although this has never been reported in human poisoning cases. If methanol poisoning is suspected, the serum methanol level can be determined and metabolic acidosis corrected with sodium bicarbonate.
