In electronics, a diode is a two-terminal P-N junction device (thermionic diodes may also have one or two ancillary terminals for a heater). Diodes have two active electrodes between which the signa...

As we have seen, this is exactly what a semiconductor diode does. The simplest kind of rectifier circuit is the half-wave rectifier. It only allows one half of an AC waveform to pass through to the load. (Figure below)

Semiconductor diodes are symbolized in schematic diagrams such as Figure below. The term “diode” is customarily reserved for small signal devices, I ≤ 1 A. The term rectifier is used for power devices, I > 1 A. ... Semiconductor diode schematic symbol: Arrows indicate the direction of electron current flow.

The Electronics Club ... You can use a multimeter or a simple tester (battery, resistor and LED) to check that a diode conducts in one direction but not the other. A lamp may be used to test a rectifier diode, but do NOT use a lamp to test a signal diode because the large current passed by the lamp will destroy the diode!

Rectifier diodes are diodes that are used to convert AC signals to DC and from DC to AC. Some useful facts are: I. Rectifier diodes can be found in power supplies. They can also be used for To identify this type of diode one must read the value off the component or find the part number or the manufacturers number.

A rectifier is an electric check valve. A check valve is a pneumatic or hydraulic device allowing only one-way flow. One-way flow is the key. An early vacuum tube rectifier was called a Fleming Valve. Electrons would flow from a cathode to an anode but not the other way because the cathode was heated and the anode was not.
