Has the word 'Disrespect' always been used as a verb such as "You shouldn't disrespect him like that" or "He was disrespected in front of his friends", or is the use as a verb a more recent event? I know the slang 'diss'/'dissed', but always thought of 'Disrespect' as properly only a noun or adjective.

And this is what I found: the transitive verb "to disrespect" dates from 1614, some 17 years before "disrespect" appeared in print as a noun. ... So, maybe disrespect was used as a verb 400 years ago, before the noun form became the favourite son ... but doesn't that tell you ... As a verb, disrespect has two meanings:

Is disrespect as a verb really such a new usage? ... Guess I need a copy of the OED as I couldn’t find disrespect as a verb in either of my dictionaries. I stand corrected and will live with it!
