Re: When do we put a comma before and? ... Back in the dark ages when I went to school, my English teacher taught us that commas go both before and after "as well as," but I am often corrected by my young colleagues for my abundant use of commas.

Note: The conjunction AND in the above sentence for the last item in the series does not need a comma as the comma in a series actually functions as a conjunction. In the first sentence, I would not put a comma before "as well as" unless I also put one before "for."; In the second sentence, you need the comma after "apprehensive" because what follows is the coordinating conjunction "so." When you join two sentences with a coordinating conjuction, you use a comma.

A good list needs a comma after each item, apart from the second to last item, which is followed by 'and', then the final item. Like this:
