Discusion about Magnets are a potential power source in the AboveTopSecret.com website alternative topics discussion forum ATS Skunk Works. ... Great topic, something I've been exploring for quite a while. Just to clear things up though,,,, magnets do weaken over time and eventually lose their power. They aren't forever.

Are permanent magnets really permanent? ; Magnets generally retain their magnetism unless they are stored near power lines, other magnets, and high temperatures. Over time, magnet materials lose a very small amount of magnetism. ... Do magnets get weaker? How?; Several factors can weaken the magnetism in a magnet.

Under normal conditions, neodymium magnets retain their magnetism nearly indefinitely. They differ in this case from conventional ferrite magnets that lose their magnetism over time, even without outside influences.

Even if magnets are the same size and shape, they may vary in magnetic strength. Magnets also age (weaken) over time. This aging may be accelerated if a magnet is dropped or tapped in a weak magnetic field.

If magnets are made of the same material, the heavier the magnet, the stronger it will be (unless they are very different in age since magnets age or weaken over time). If magnets are made of different materials, heavier magnets may or may not be stronger.
