The outer part of the feather is waterproof while the inner down section traps an insulating layer of air, keeping the penguin warm in the sometimes freezing water.

We recently explored how penguins keep from freezing in the icy cold water of the South Pole. We did this by creating two penguins on a piece of drawing paper and sinking them in some "very cold water". The "very cold water" was simulated by mixing blue paint in with some water and painting it over the two penguins.
