Rich people do pay more in tax dollars but I think the poor pay a higher price in terms of the affect taxes have on them. Taxes may hinder ... Great post! I always hear people complaining that the rich pay less in taxes, but they never have any facts to back up this claim. After reading this I feel a little more informed.

I know that Republicans think that the rich should pay less taxes than the rest of us (ostensibly because they incur so much risk starting the businesses that create jobs), but a story in todays New York Times notes that the number of very rich who pay no taxes ... Many of these people are very bright and highly motivated.

At the time this was a relatively new issue for me, but the suggestion that there was $311 billion in uncollected taxes stood out to me and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. So when Mr. Bush said that rich people don't pay taxes, I began to wonder if there wasn't more to that story.

Granted, this is in Britian, but the point is clear - rich people can afford to hire smart people to shelter their money to avoid income taxes. At least the FairTax would be hard for those people to avoid.
