Dogs excel at night vision and the detection of moving objects. Figure 1 is a rough guesstimate of what a dog and human might see when viewing a color band (the electromagnetic spectrum).

Dogs do not have the ability to focus as well on the shape of objects (their visual acuity is lower). An object a human can see clearly may appear to be blurred to a dog looking at it from the same distance. A rough estimate is that dogs have about 20/75 vision.

Why can dogs only see black and white? Michelangelo I believe this is a myth, caused by early, not very sophisticated studies. As far as I know (I used to study color vision in fish) dogs can see color. But apparently color is not nearly as important to them as it is to us.

A dog's field of vision is much broader than humans, because the dog's eyes are on the sides of its head. Dogs cannot see as much detail as humans, but have excellent night vision.
