Like calcite, dolomite occurs in virtually all geologic settings: in igneous rocks as carbonatite, in metamorphic rocks as marble, and in hydrothermal deposits. Also like calcite, the most abundant occurrences are in sedimentary rocks;

Results from laboratory investigations have demonstrated that pure dolomite is much stronger than pure calcite. However the deformation characteristics of calcite-dolomite rocks on the thermal aureole of some plutons suggest that at high temperature there is a switch in the relative strength of calcite and dolomite.

Dolomite looks very much like limestone except that it is generally tan in colour and fizzes weakly if at all when a drop of cold dilute hydrochloric acid is put on it. If dolomite is ground to a powder or hot acid is applied, it will fizz strongly.

The mineral dolomite is composed of calcium magnesium carbonate CaMg(CO3)2 and is closely related to calcite, the main component of limestone. In large masses, the mineral forms the rock called dolomite. ... Read more about dolomite in Rocks and Minerals in the Red Hills.
