Dostoevsky's novels anticipated many of the ideas of Nietzsche and Freud. Dostoevsky himself was strongly influenced by such thinkers as Aleksandr Herzen and Vissarion Belinsky. He saw that great art must have liberty to develop on its own terms, but it always deals with central social concerns.

Dostoevsky was born in Moscow, as the second son of a former army doctor. ... I've never read anything by him and I want to broaden my reading since I read mostly British/American novels with the occasion foreign novel every now and then. The only works I'm familiar with are Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment.

He combines the Nechayev case and his own beliefs in order to create the central plot of the Devils.
