This project addresses the special case of selecting inks for duotone printing, a relatively inexpensive process in which just two inks are used. Traditional duotone printing almost always uses black as one of the two inks.

A Duotone is a wonderful way to make a monochrome print. Experienced printers know that Epson's Photo printers, as good as they are — and they are the elite of the inkjet printer world — don't do a terribly good job printing B&W images.

In effect, duotones are a combination of two grayscale images, using two negatives and two printing plates. Sometimes we see super print quality using two blacks, to add midtones or highlights to an image, ... The duotone effect is achieved by imaging the two negatives with different (sometimes very different) tonal ranges.

Unless you are involved with the printing industry, you most likely will not understand it if your Printer makes a squinted face at your request of a specific matching color for your duotone printing needs. There are close to 1000 PANTONE-identified colors available for a single duotone job.

Of course, you can save your Duotone settings and it's a good idea to do so, especially if you are offset printing your results. You can then load the settings when making duotones of other black and white images so that they will all be consistent, if you desire.
