Back when trucks had points you could adjust, dwell angle was what you gapped your points at. The greater the dwell, the longer the points stayed closed,(conducting electricity). On your tester the black lead goes to ground, the red lead we...

I adjusted my points yesterday but I don't think the dwell meter was very useful. Besides having to hook up the power connections backwards, it think that the dwell readings are also going to be backwards. My shop manual says dwell should be between 58 and 62 degrees.

The way I set the dwell is this; remove the distributor cap and rotor, ground the coil wire and remove all the spark plugs from the engine. Set up your dwell meter and hook up a remote starter. Turn the key ON and crank the engine.

You usually hook up the dwell meter by attaching one lead to ground and the other to the negative terminal of the coil. Start the car and measure the initial dwell angle.

Just picked up a free dwell/Tachometer meter at a garage sale. It has been to long since I've used one of these. What do I hook it up to? What exactly is dwell and tach? Also noticed it has a scale that tells you the condition of the points (good or bad) There is also a switch on it not sure what this is for.
