The Elder Tree ... There was a Roman belief that the souls of the dead gathered in the elder tree until Samhain when they would be released by ceremonially burning branches of the tree. Obviously this would have to be done in a carefully controlled way, but I think is a lovely addition to a Samhain ceremony.
