It is my theory that the erosion has been caused by electrolytic action. This is based on the fact that the bolts are eroded away (sometimes to a 1/10 of original diameter!) as opposed to corroded. In an attempt to cure the problem, the bolts have been replaced with one made of 304 grade stainless steel.
