Electroshock therapy is used for treatment of depression and manic depression. Electroshock therapy is usually administered to patients in a series of six to twelve treatments over a two week period. Most people who undergo electroshock therapy have had no success on antidepressants or mood stabilizing medications.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is most often performed in a hospital's operating or recovery room under general anesthesia. Electricity is delivered to the brain for several seconds to cause seizure activity. Medicine is given to prevent the seizure from spreading throughout the body.
