I used to work on the Stanislaus NF and we occasionally got into the Emigrant Wilderness. As I recall, there is no off-trail required to get to Emigrant Lake - a trail runs the length of it. Like most lakes in the Emigrant Wilderness, Emgrant Lake is probably pretty shallow with a low dam at the outlet, but still cold.
