The knock sensor is basically just a microphone screwed into the side of the engine block. You can actually connect an audio amplifier (or in my case, a tape recorder) to the output of this sensor and hear the pinging caused by detonation, along with all the other noises that an engine makes.

Another way to check the knock sensor is with a timing light. Give the block a few raps with a hammer with the engine speed at anywhere above about 1,500 RPM. You should see the timing retard accordingly.

Your car may still run, but your engine will vibrate which can cause engine damage. Taking your car to the dealership is a pricey proposition as you will pay a premium for the knock sensor plus labor. A better option for you is to do the work yourself.

hi, anyone help me how to install the engine knock sensor. There is an angle for one of the sensor about angle=70 degrees. If the angle is slightly out of 70 degrees, will it cause the erratic idle????. My car 318is coupe, has an erratic idle after changing the 2 knock sensors.
