Ribosomes
All living cells contain ribosomes, tiny organelles composed of approximately 60 percent ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and 40 percent protein. However, though they are generally described as organelles, it is… More »

Function of Ribosomes Prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes do not differ in any fundamental way; both preform the same functions by the same set of chemical reactions. The genetic code is the same in all living organism, and it has been demonstrated that eukaryotic ribosomes are able to translate bacterial mRNAs correctly.

To study the interaction of aminoglycoside antibiotics with selected eukaryotic ribosomes, The activities of the hybrid ribosomes indicate that helix 44 of the rRNA decoding site behaves as an autonomous domain, which can be exchanged between ribosomes of different phylogenetic domains for study of function.
