Digging out a basement involves tearing out the existing concrete floor (and shelf, if there is one), excavating the dirt from the additional space you want to capture, then pouring a new concrete foundation and floor.

You might choose to make this your new exercise plan, and do an hour of digging and hauling every day after work. You'd be surprised... in a few months you'll have it excavated. But you need to make sure you don't undermine the footings, which shouldn't be a big problem if you are only excavating a foot or so.

Another big problem with excavating your basement is flooding, you will find that once you dig to a certain point you will hit water level and your excavation and basement foundation may become flooded. If your excavation does become flooded it will hamper any plans you have for your new concrete floor.
