When we discuss moving faster than the speed of light, we are really talking about exceeding the speed of light in vacuum c (299,792,458 m/s). The Cherenkov effect is thus not considered to be a real example of FTL travel.

distance = 1/2 acceleration x time^2 and since a = 980 cm/sec/sec and 4.2 light years/2 = 2 x 10^18 centimeters, you get time = 64 million seconds. Then, from v = acceleration x time = 980 x 64 million = 6.3 x 10^10 cm/sec which is 2.1 times the speed of light.

That is to say, are you creating an effect at one end of the cesium gas and then 300 times faster than the speed of light you're getting the same effect at the other end, or are you creating some other different thing in this gas that's really not exceeding the speed of light in energy, but exceeding the speed of light...

"I believe that this is the first experimental demonstration of sound going faster than light," Robertson said. Past research has proven it possible to transmit electrical and even light pulses with group velocities exceeding c. ... The standard metric for the speed of light is that of light traveling in vacuum.

They would move far beyond the speed of light, so fast that they would keep in touch every aspect of the universe at all times. Again, we are back to the idea, that time and space, and the abundance of material we believe to be made up of yet smaller particles, are really a continuity or inseparable whole.

There is nothing in special or general relativity to prevent this apparent velocity from exceeding the speed of light. No faster-than-light signals can be sent via this mechanism, and it does not lead to any paradoxes.
