Science experiment 320. Sand Angles. Angle of repose. If you play with different materials, you will find that each has its own angle of repose. Some will form steeper slopes, while others form much flatter slopes. ... This week's experiment is a result of taking some time off. ... That slope is called the angle of repose.

Experiment 6 The Coefficient of Friction 2. If the mass on the block is doubled, what happens to the angle of repose? 3. Why was it necessary to tap the block to get it started in section 9 of the lab? 4. Why can anti-lock brakes stop a car in a shorter distance than regular brakes?

The forces of gravity and friction are in balance at the angle of repose which is the maximum slope angle that unconsolidated materials can maintain. At angles steeper than the angle of repose friction is not sufficient to counter gravity and mass wasting occurs.

Perhaps secondary factors such as these will affect differences in the angle of repose, but I do not think it can be gravity per se. Of course, there is no wet soil on Mars today. On Earth, the range of angles varies from ~30 to 39 . This is due to a number of factors (some eluded to above) which can be complicated.
