the milk i've seen at supermarkets have 4 day expiration dates.. when i asked the few guys here at work.. they said it was because the milk is "fresh" and that it really does go bad in 4 days.. if i want the milk to last longer they said i should purchase the stuff in a can.

All milk has a sell by (use by?) date. Even if you keep milk in a refigerator you know that it will still spoil if you keep it too long after the expiration date. If the milk sat a room temperature overnight, I would say that you have at most 1 week to use it after you get it cold.
