It is our conclusion that suckling of the mammary gland by the calf during the early postpartum period leads to stimulation of the lumbo-sacral micturition center through the mammary branches of the genito-femoral and pudendal nerves coming from the lumbar and sacral regions, leading to reflex micturition.

We undertook a study to explain this suckling micturition reflex. In our study, we monitored 30 cows for the suckling micturition reflex without a local anesthesia to the udder, 10 cows with a local anesthesia to the udder, and 50 lactating women (after breastfeeding their infants) via a questionnaire.

The latency of the reflex (mean ± SD) was 49.2 ± 8.2 ms. It seems that the olfactory micturition reflex induces micturition in the absence of a full bladder. This would explain the repeated successive urination of small amounts of urine, characteristic of dogs, on smelling a uriniferous odor.

Micturition (Urination) ; Micturition is the process by which urine is expelled from the bladder. ... When the walls of the bladder contract, nerve receptors are stimulated, and the urination reflex is triggered. The urination reflex causes the internal urethral sphincter to open and the external urethral sphincter to relax.

Warmed saline [0.9% (w/v)] was then infused into the bladder at 3 ml/min until voiding (the micturition reflex) occurred, characterized by a large-amplitude bladder contraction with the concomitant release of fluid from the urethral opening.
