The blue pike was closely related to a fish called the walleye. Although the blue pike was declared extinct in 1975, scientists think they found blue pike DNA in Lake Erie. Some people might have been catching blue pikes also.

Was it the same time the Blue Pike disappeared? Even with a concentrated effort some lampreys still plague our waters. It's hard to get rid of an entire species completely. My son says we got rid of the lampreys after the reported extinction of the blue pike.

As a matter of fact one could argue that at one time there were more Blue Pike in the Great lakes than any other fish in the world. There has not been a confirmed Blue Pike seen since the early 70's. It would appear that we have in our lifetimes been party to passenger pigeon type extinction.
