Unlike the other small bodies in the solar system, comets have been known since antiquity. There are Chinese records of Comet Halley going back to at least 240 BC. The famous Bayeux Tapestry, which commemorates the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, depicts an apparition of Comet Halley.

COMETS are members of our Solar System. But unlike the Earth and other planets, which always stay at approximately the same distance from the Sun, most comets are great travelers that spend most of their time on the outskirts of the Solar System (way beyond Pluto!) and then wisk in briefly for a close pass near the Sun.

Tails on comets are different because of the photon pressure. Comets are not hot when traveling throgh space, they are still cold. So if the comet gets to close to the sun, the comet will fade away by melting. The person that found the comet has it's name for identification.
