Scoria:; Dark volcanic rock containing cavities created by gas bubbles trapped in lava. Scoria is formed when blobs of gas-charged lava are thrown into the air during an eruption and cool in flight.

On some of the buttes, bright red streaks may be seen. This is scoria, or burnt clay. Lignite beds in the buttes caught fire and baked the clay strata to brick-like hardness. Scoria is used for road making around here.
