Hi Bob, Fagus sylvatica suffers in most parts of Georgia. I live in the Atlanta area and have several cultivars including Roseo Marginata. The green leaved ones are doing OK. The ones with darker leaves not so well and ... As a side note, Fagus sylvatica 'Roseomarginata' is correctly F. sylvatica 'Purpurea Tricolor'.

Native to Europe F sylvatica is extensively used for landscaping and has long been considered the finest species for a specimen tree. Thin, smooth bluish gray bark, silvery in new growth, darkens with age. All cultivars tolerate pruning well and grow best in moist, well drained, acid soils.
