People seem to just be looking at the list of polyglots in wikipedia and choosing the ones who reputedly know/knew the largest number of languages. But the folks in the upper tiers of this list are names that most of us have never heard, they could hardly qualify as "MOST FAMOUS"!!

If you look up famous polyglots, you find occasional references to someone having known x number of languages but needing some time to refresh if asked to use one of the odder selections. I'd propose that the typical language addict is going to wind up studying a lot more languages than he or she will actually learn.
