Actually, the Moon appears to wobble a bit (due to its slightly non-circular orbit) so that a few degrees of the far side can be seen from time to time, but the majority of the far side (left) was completely unknown until the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 photographed it in 1959. (Note: there is no "dark side" of the Moon;

CLEMENTINE COLOR MOSAICS OF LUNAR FAR SIDE MARIA. Jeffrey J. Gillis1 and Paul D. Spudis2, 1. Dept. This method can also help to pin down the boundary between two stratigraphic units that are discriminated by accumulated crater density but were so fluid that they have no flow fronts (e.g. Mare Moscoviense [4]).

The dark areas on the moon are known as maria (MAHR ee uh). The word maria is Latin for seas; ... Basins occur equally on the near side and far side. Most basins have little or no fill of basalt, particularly those on the far side. The difference in filling may be related to variations in the thickness of the crust.

used to be called the "Railway Line" (11). Despite the fact that NASA has launched satellites into the Moon’s orbit, such as the Clementine, that are capable of producing high resolution images of the Moon, no high resolution images of the far side of the Moon are available for the public to view (12).

For now there are no breakthroughs, but the new data is expected to provide researchers with lots ... Some type of imbalance arose that caused the near and far sides to develop differently, with far more maria on the near side. Whether that imbalance was the result of a giant impact or some internal change wasn't known.

It is likely that tidal locking and the near-side/ far-side differentiation events leaving 30% maria near side and 2% far side are so strongly contingent on a series of chance events arising at, during, and immediately after the earth-moon formation phase, that they are a necessary and unique result--and very hard to...
