In the Middle Ages you had no choice. If you were the child of a peasant, you would wear anything you could get. If you were royalty, however, it would be silk robes and damask gowns. Clothing in the middle ages was rough and scratchy, but in some cases was smooth and finely sewn, (depending on how wealthy you were).
