One Fell Swoop ... Dear Evan: I was looking up words in the dictionary the other day (one of my favorite leisure activities), and came across a short note on the origin of "tawdry." My dictionary said that it is based on the name of a certain Saint Audrey, but it didn't explain that at all.

Weekly etymology webzine ... Some people at work started debating the origin of the phrase one fell swoop. Some theories that we came up with for its origin were 1) falconry - the bird dives (or swoops) down for the kill, or 2) beheadings - the best way to be beheaded was with one good chop.

Here's a phrase that's concerning to me (ha ha): "one fell swoop." I know it means "all at once," but I wonder about its origins. Dive-bombing pelicans? Hawks? Shakespeare?
