WHAT IS FIELD SEARCHING? When information is entered into a record's field, some search engines allow you to retrieve it by using the correct field label in combination with your search term(s). Where available, field searching on the Web is a very powerful tool.

The beginning TO end part defines the boundaries of the field. The CONTAINS part indicates the words or phrases you are searching for in the field. The only connector allowed in the beginning and end expressions in a field definition is OR. Examples:

Field Searching-A search that looks for the occurrence of a term or terms in a specific field. Searching a specific field is more precise than searching all fields of the database. Performing a title or subject search in CLICnet is an example of field searching.

Patents are divided into many fields, such as inventor name. By narrowing your search so that a document is only counted as a 'Hit' if the term you are searching for occurs in the field you specified, you can greatly decrease the likelihood of having extraneous patents returned.
