Fireclay based mortar is very good in heat. Mix dry ingredients first, and then add gradually water while mixing - all by hand. After it's mixed leave the mud untouched for 10 minutes and then give it a quick remix - at this second mixing stage you might need to add just a little water in to improve consistency.

You can mix "heat resistant" mortar yourself. Buy a bag of mortar clay (sometimes called fire clay) and mix that into the mortar mix. The bag will usually have a suggested ratio of cement, sand and clay.

Many fireplace masons are not familiar with refractory mortar, or they confuse it with fireclay mortar. Masonry fireboxes are often laid in ordinary Portland cement mortar, sometimes with a little extra cement in it or perhaps with some fire-clay added to make it "fire-clay mortar".

Clay, Dig Your Own Clay; & Fire Without A Kiln ... Commercial clays can be added to balance the mix. Commercial ball clay adds plasticity (so it is less apt to crack when bending it). On the other hand, crude ground fireclay, china clay (kaolin) fine sand, and/or grog reduce plasticity (make it less sticky and shrink less).

Manufacturing of refractory bricks from fire-clay is an interesting feature. The clay mined is stacked in the factory yard and allowed to weather for about a year. For daily production of different types of refractories, this weathered clay is taken and mixed in different percentages with grog.
