Otolith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An otolith , (οτο-, oto- , ear + λιθος, lithos , a stone), also called statoconium or otoconium is a structure in the saccule or utricle of the inner ear, specifically in the vestibular laby...

To avoid the effects of long-term laboratory exposure, tag and release of wild fish can be useful in validating annulus deposition. This figure shows the fluorescent tag of a common snook otolith.

In fish, the otolith serves as a sensory organ, playing a role in hearing and balance. We collect otoliths then use them to age halibut at the IPHC, and that's my main job here. As the fish grows, so does the otolith, and we have used otolith weight and length to estimate the size of halibut.

An otolith is thermal marked by changing the water temperature during incubation. This induces a "dark ring" in the microstructure of a fish's otolith. ... How Can You Find a Thermal Mark? To find a thermal mark on an otolith, fish must be sampled, then their sagittae otoliths (the largest of the 3 pairs) are removed.

The Mark Lab tracks Alaska salmon populations by deciphering thermal marks induced in fish otoliths. We have pioneered many aspects of this low-cost method of mass marking. The technology we developed has been extended to computer analysis of salmon scales as well.

An information source for scientists and students interested in fish otoliths and otolith use in age, growth, stock identification and fish population studies. ... Indeed, virtually the entire lifetime of the fish is recorded in the otolith. For that reason, otoliths are used and studied in almost every fisheries laboratory...

The above approach works well for most fish species. However, other approaches work better for some fishes. For a more detailed list of alternatives, see the on-line manual "Otolith Removal and Preparation for Microstructural Examination".
