The Five-lined Skink (Eumeces fasciatus) is one of the most common lizards in the Eastern United States, so we saw them when we lived in Alabama and enjoy seeing them here in Central Virginia. You can see how they got their name with this photo that shows the light-colored lines.

Five-lined Skink; The Five-lined Skink (Eumeces faciatus) is found throughout the trail area. It is common on nearby tobacco barns and old cabins. In large males the strips are lost, and the tail becomes brownish. The immature five-lined skinks have a bright blue tail.
