Sadly, one of the most likely places to see a fox squirrel is on the side of the road as a roadkill. These big, beautiful squirrels are often hit by cars as they try to cross country roads. Sherman’s Fox Squirrel and the Big Cypress Fox Squirrel are listed as threatened by Florida state authorities.

Sherman's fox squirrel may be very light tan to nearly black and some individuals exhibit a reddish coloration. The black head is typical of Sherman's fox squirrel in Florida. There is no real difference between male and female species with respect to size or coloration.

The Sherman fox squirrel is found in peninsular Florida to the north end of Lake Okeechobee. Its preferred habitat is pine forests of longleaf pine or South Florida slash pine, where it eats pine seeds and acorns.
