Flying standby with a discounted ticket can still be free on some airlines, but it's trickier. It's also alot riskier today with airlines operating fewer flights, using smaller planes and discounting fares to fill up every seat.

But your flight is at 7:30, and even if you got out of work early you would still be sitting at LaGuardia for five hours waiting for your flight -- and that's no fun. Solution? Fly standby. The concept of standing by, or taking an earlier flight, on an itinerary has been around since the beginning of commercial aviation.

Flying standby, also, as I understand it, is basically unavailable these days unless you're closely related to an airline employee. More info here.
