When light strikes a concave mirror of curvature radius R, the light waves will reflect and converge at a point on the principal axis that is 1/2 * R in front of the mirror. This point is called the focal point. Since light is converging at the focal point, it is also diverging from that point on the other side.

Parabolic mirrors are really the only mirrors that focus parallel rays to a single focal point, but as long as the rays don't get too far from the principal axis then the equation above applies for spherical mirrors.

(Only thin, single lenses are dealt with in Physics 20. Note as well that the ... F, sometimes also referred to as the primary focal point, is shown on the right side of a converging lens, and on the left side of a diverging lens, while F', the secondary focal point is shown on the opposite side of each respective lens.)

As such, this light should reflect and pass through the focal point. A common Physics demonstration involves using a large demonstration mirror to set a pencil aflame in a matter of seconds.

Question hey what is the formula for focal point? please answerr! Answer; Hello Robert, Nice to see you again. The formula is 1/f= 1/do + 1/di. This is: one over focal length equals one over distance from the object to the lens plus one over ... ; You are here: Experts > Science > Physics > Physics > Focal Point;

A set of parallel rays are reflected by the inside surface of a spherical mirror to converge at a Focal Point, F, that is halfway between the mirror and the center, C, of the sphere.
