Any catheter which is inserted into the bladder and allowed to remain in the bladder is called an indwelling catheter. A common type of indwelling catheter is a Foley catheter. A Foley catheter has a balloon attachment at one end.

The Foley catheter has a rounded tip, one or two 'eyes' (holes through which the urine enters the main tube), and a tiny balloon that can be inflated once the catheter is in place. Before insertion the balloon is evident as just a slightly raised area near the tip of the catheter.
