A formant is a concentration of acoustic energy around a particular frequency in the speech wave. There are several formants, each at a different frequency, roughly one in each 1000Hz band. Or, to put it differently, formants occur at roughly 1000Hz intervals.

The term formant refers to peaks in the harmonic spectrum of a complex sound which arise from some sort of resonance of the source. Because of their resonant origin, they tend to stay essentially the same when the frequency of the fundamental is changed.

formant transitions: as the vocal tract moves from its position for the consonant to its position for a following vowel, there are very brief influences on the formants at the beginning of the vowel. There are also influences on the formants at the end of a preceding vowel.
