; We're used to the standard molar enthalpy of formation of a compound. Ions in solution also have a heat of formation: when we add a substance such as HCl to water it breaks apart into ions. HCl(g) -> H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

The present state of our knowledge concerning the formation of positive and negative ions in the earth's normal ionosphere is reviewed. The main process by which positive ions and electrons are formed in the ionosphere is photoionization of neutral constituents by solar vacuum ultraviolet radiation. ... Personal Author(s) :

Mechanism of formation of negative ions produced in gases irradiated by energetic electrons has been extensively studied using mass spectrometers. It is well known that negative ions are formed by dissociative or non-dissociative attachment of electrons to molecules or by pair creation of positive and negative ions.

This helps in the formation of new bonds which are more energetically favourable for the atoms and molecules involved in the reaction. If a reaction evolves more energy than was necessary to begin ... The valence of a salt is given by the number of hydrogen ions which are able to be transferred in a given reaction.

I can’t draw the structure of the salicylate ion using email software, but it would be HO-C6H4-COO-, with the –OH and –COO- in the 1 & 2 positions on the benzene ring. Since complex formation requires lone pair(s) of electrons on the ligand molecule or ion, it must be oxygen atoms which are bonded to the Fe3+ ions.

Production of positive ions by electron impact within the mass spectrometer and subsequent secondary electron emission from cesiated surfaces produced spurious or pseudonegative ion signals which interfered with attempts to sample negative ions from the plasma.
