The image below divides the meander into areas of deposition and erosion. As water enters the meander it slows on the inside and deposits its load to form point bars. Conversly, as the water enters the meander on the outside it speeds up and erodes the surface to form a cut-bank.

Figure 1 is a reconstruction of the course of the River in 1863, a period before any really large meander-loop cut-offs had been mad. It was not a pristine condition, however, because Henry Shreve had made his epochal cut-off of the huge loop at the mouth of the Red River a number of years earlier.

This formulation leads to a linear differential equation which is solved for its orthogonal components, which give the rates of meander growth and downstream migration. It is shown that the amplitude of the meanders tends to increase ... You are here: Home → Bibliography → Secondary current and river-meander formation...

(3) meander formation; and (4) detachment of the eddy from the Kuroshio and their repetition. The analyses revealed that the inshore high potential vorticity (PV) water is generated at the sharp coastal topography (the Kii peninsula).

The recent formation of the Kuroshio large meander southeast of the Kii Peninsula during the period from May to July 2004 has been simulated successfully in an eddy-resolving ocean forecast system (Japanese Coastal Ocean Predictability Experiment).
