It has been localized to the basement membrane lamina lucida and functions to bind epithelial cells to the basement membrane. A heparan sulfate proteoglycan has also been identified in the basement membrane. Its biological function may be to restrict the penetration of anionic macromolecules through the basement membrane.

(i) A basement membrane of five to six layers immediately underlying the epithelium. Each layer consists of right-hand and left-hand geodesic fibres making a lattice, whose constituent parallelograms have a side length of from 5 to 6µ. The fibres are attached to one another where they cross;

The negative charge of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) has been attributed to the presence of heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) called perlecan, which is widely distributed in various kinds of basement membranes, in addition to GBM. ... The function of bamacan has not been well elucidated yet.

Mice with a targeted deletion of the nidogen-binding site of laminin 1 were used to study the function of the pial basement membrane in cortical histogenesis. The pial basement membrane in the mutant embryos assembled but was unstable and disintegrated at random segments.

In the equine hoof, the basement membrane connects the heavily keratinised hoof wall to the dense connective tissue of the distal phalanx, a region able to withstand considerable mechanical stress. This study investigated the properties of this important anatomical and physiological structure.

The water permeability of the basement membrane (lens capsule) of the crystalline lens of the adult normal and diabetic rat has been investigated. The hydraulic conductivity at low pressure is 51.4 +/- 7.8 X 10(-12) msec-1 Pa-1 in the normal rats and 70.3 +/- 11.1 msec-1 Pa-1 in the diabetic rat.
