I was wondering if you could describe in 50-100 words galvanic action in metals, in general terms. I'm currently studying and cannot find any info describing what takes place in this process.

What will be the effect of galvanic action, and how to prevent it? ... Aluminum is always found as aluminum oxide and if it is in touch with steel, no galvanic should not be significant. Atmospheric corrosion does affect steel but a high conductive environment or aqueous solution (acidic or basic is required).

I would also like to know general guidelines for avoiding galvanic action on piping and so forth; I need to have a water heater installed andwas told to use fittings which use a mix of different metals in it's construction...

My problem is the corrosion from galvanic action between the copper tee and the brass valve that controls the bilge suction hose. Can anyone tell me how to stop the corrosion of the valve? The one I have in my hand is almost completely pink because the zinc has completely dissolved.

With thanks to Bernie Windham: Having dissimilar metals in the teeth(e.g.-amalgam, or gold and mercury) causes galvanic action, electrical currents, and much higher mercury vapor levels and levels in oral tissues.

The purpose of the sacrificial anode in Dux water heaters is to provide a metal (magnesium or aluminium) more reactive than the steel, brass or copper of the tank, element or valves for the corrosive effects of galvanic action to concentrate.

The galvanic action increases as the metals are farther apart in the Galvanic Series. It is not always true that there is greater corrosion the further down the scale one goes. In certain cases one metal immediately following another may be very corrosive.
