Geometric isomers are two or more coordination compounds which contain the same number and types of atoms, and bonds (i.e., the connectivity between atoms is the same), but which have different spatial arrangements of the atoms.

Notice that geometric isomers have different physical properties. In fact, geometric isomers are diastereomers, i.e. they are stereoisomers that are not enantiomers. The prefixes cis and trans refer to the relative dispositions of the substituents attached to the doubly bonded carbon atoms.

Geometric Isomers Geometric isomers are two molecules that have the same basic structure but vary subtly in their geometry. Your hands are like geometric isomers they have the same basic structure but are not identical (a right-handed glove will not fit on your left hand).

Geometric Isomer definition, as used in chemistry, chemical engineering, and physics. ... Return to the Chemistry Glossary Index ... Examples: Two geometric isomers exist for Pt(NH3)2Cl2, one in which the species are arranged around the Pt in the order Cl, Cl, NH3, NH3, and another in which the species are ordered NH3, Cl, NH3, Cl.

USAN perspective on geometric isomerism and chirality ... Geometric isomers of alkenes, in which atoms and groups are arranged asymmetrically about a double bond, are also diastereomers. When they are designated as cis- or –trans, this is based on judgments about the similarity of substituents attached to the double bond.

Within the context of organic chemistry consider the two compounds: dimethyl ether and ethanol. Both have the formula: ... These are frequently termed geometric isomers, in contrast to the previous that are typically termed structural isomers. But, like I said, these terms are often carelessly used interchangeably.
