The giant mole rat is the main food item; other prey includes grass rats and hares. The Ethiopian wolf is mostly diurnal, but it can be nocturnal in areas where it is persecuted. Dens usually consist of a system of burrows beneath a rock overhang or cliffs.

The giant golden mole is endemic to South Africa. It has been recorded from indigenous Afro-montane forests in the Eastern Cape Province from East London northwards along the coast to Port St. Johns, and inland to Amatola and Kologha Mountains near King Williams Town and Stutterheim.
