Gnomonic projection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A gnomonic map projection displays all great circles as straight lines. Thus the shortest route between two locations in reality corresponds to that on the map. This is achieved by projecting, with ...

In a gnomonic projection, great circles are mapped to straight lines. The gnomonic projection represents the image formed by a spherical lens, ...

it is the general case of the azimuthal orthographic, stereographic and gnomonic projections, and is itself a limiting case of the oblique (or tilted) perspective projection, which does not require the projection plane to be perpendicular to the convergence line and is not necessarily azimuthal.

Variation Within Gnomonic Projections: Gnomonic projections differ from one another in their aspect. Usually, a cartographer will specify the projection's aspect by specifying the latitude and longitude of the point of tangency.

The concept of gnomonic projection requires some explanation. It is the only map projection that shows great circles as straight lines - thus all meteors can be drawn onto gnomonic charts as straight lines too. On other maps, such as those found in "Norton's Star Atlas", most meteors would appear as sections of arcs.

type of azimuthal projection (in map (cartography): Map projections) ... If the perspective is from the centre of the Earth, the projection is called gnomonic; if from the far side of the Earth’s surface, it is stereographic; if from space, it is called orthographic.

As part of the ADVISER project out of Brown University we are working on an system that replaces the single cylindrical projection with six gnomonic projections. The result is a system, which takes advantage of the ease and efficiencies of the above systems and also avoids significant problem areas.

The Gnomonic projection is one which has a greater expansion, away from the origin, than a conformal projection. It gives quite a distorted apperance, therefore: ... Hence, on the gnomonic projection, all great circles are represented by straight lines, making it very useful in plotting great circle routes between...

A set of programs was developed primarily by Dr P.D. Carr at the University of Liverpool for handling Laue Gnomonic projections particularly as a means for crystal orientation and cell determination. They have been made available for distribution with the Laue Software Suite but are not actively supported at Daresbury.
