These gooseneck barnacles, Pollicipes polymerus, have the characteristics of the more common volcano-type barnacles (like the buckshot and balanus), in that they are also filter feeders, capable of living rather high in the intertidal, being hermaphroditic, cross fertilizers, and having numerous planktonic larvae.

Gooseneck barnacles are filter feeders. They feed on smaller crustaceans and plankton. They do this by projecting their feathery feet called cirri to trap organisms. The cirri also act as lungs for gaseous exchange.

Gooseneck barnacles, exposed at low tide, adhere to a rock. The shell, or capitulum, of the gooseneck barnacle grows to be about two inches long. It is made up of small plates, which enclose its soft body. Inside the shell, the barnacle primarily consists of long segmented legs, intestines and stomach.

Locale and Season: Gooseneck barnacles are found in the Mediterranean and close-lying areas of the eastern Atlantic. Spaniards prize those from Galicia in northwest Spain. They are in season in summer but are most in demand for Christmas.
