In 1978, a six-month-old Mexican American infant with a terrible cough and a distended abdomen was admitted to a hospital in the Southwestern U.S. The resident who recorded the baby's history learned that the infant's grandmother had treated his cough with a folk remedy that she called té de yerba gordolobo.

The Gordolobo is a Eurasian species that grows in sandy and clay soils. With the exception of the northernmost, is common in the dry slopes, edges of roads, tailings, old walls and vacant lots. It is grown easily.
